Pollution from air traffic

Airplanes burn around 130 million tons of airplane fuel each year, causing enormous release of greenhouse gases. What can be done?According to experts all we can do is design new environmentally friendly planes and to diminish air travel. It is possible to use large turbo engines instead of ordinary airplane engines, or to use so-called open propellers. By using such engines, it would be possible to diminish fuel use by a third. We could also consider zeppilons.
