Geology in Viðey Island
Geology is of particular interest for Icelanders for obvious reasons. Only few meters away from the city´s asphalt roads interesting geological formations are to be found. Viðey itself is one of them!
Geologist Dr.Hreggviður Norðdahl leads the so-called “Tuesday walk“ in Viðey on August 28th. He will share his wisdom about how fire, ice and see have formed Viðey Island, a beautiful nature reserve only few minutes boat trip from Reykjavik.
Two million years ago Viðey was an active volcano and the rock of Viðey Island is the oldest in the Reykjavík area. At the end of the last Ice Age, 12–13,000 years ago, the sea level rose due to the melting of the glacial ice, and the island was inundated. When the sea level dropped, the island rose once more from the sea 9–10,000 years ago.
Spectacular rock formations can be seen along the shore of Viðey island wich is constantly being eroded by the forces of the sea.
The guided tour is free of charge and starts at 19:30 by Viðeyjarstofa. Extra boat trips on Tuesdays are at 18:15 and 19:15 and the boat goes back at around 22:00. Roundtrip to Viðey ISK 1000,- for adults and ISK 500,- for children 7- 15 years.
